July 10 2013 Intensive Piano Training I've offered to Students

I've just finished teaching the first Intensive piano course that I've recently began offering here in New Orleans.

The piano student was Carlos, from Madrid, Spain.  A 45 year old doctor of dentistry who considered himself a beginner pianist.  He had been training with an instructor in Spain for one year.

The course was arranged to be 2 1/2 hours per day for 10 days -- meeting in the mornings around 10:30.  Carlos and his wife (married since their teen years) stayed at a French Quarter hotel on Dauphine Street.  She also was studying music by way of learning the trumpet.

Many students cannot take more than one hour of instruction without feeling as if their brain is frying.  But Carlos' desire to learn was intense.  He quickly recognized that I had some 'stuff' to share so he asked for additional hours for each afternoon.

I supplied Carlos with a bicycle to travel the 2 miles to and from my studio.  I also let him use my Kurzweil 88 key electric piano, keeping it in their hotel room to practice during their stay.

Carlos shared with me, the materials his current instructor had been using which included standard jazz tunes such as "Fly Me To The Moon," and "Girl from Impanema".  We started by going over those songs to determine his skills.

I then introduced songs such as "I'm Walkin," "St. James Infirmary," "Georgia," and my chart for "Girl from Impanema" (which was quite different from his) and used these songs to teach my method and philosophies.  The most prevalent being the use of 2 different hand positions for each chord.  We generally stuck with 3 Major keys and one minor key -- C, F, & Bb Major, and D minor.

This was the first intensive course I had offered here in New Orleans since returning from New York City where I taught many pros, and other students of varying skill levels.  It has prompted me to offer more of these similar courses and fine tune the additional benefits such as accommodations in affordable apartments close to my studio.

I enjoy teaching and this has been my primary music endeavor for the past year and a half.  I am however still making preparations for performance.

If you're reading this and are interested in lessons of an intensive nature or just weekly meetings, contact me and we'll work out something!

Interesting post. I've read about something like this at the pianostreet forum, by a guy named Bernhard. He did something similar to this for his students. The adults would have lessons as you described above and the kids would have daily lessons of about 15 minutes. I just might have to try it with a few adult students to see how it goes.
